A few months ago, the Dean of the Faculty of Design and Communication at the University of Palermo, invited us to take on a strategic challenge: to design a new curriculum dedicated to Artificial Intelligence for creative professionals. The goal was to incorporate AI as a permanent part of the academic structure — not simply to teach tool usage, but to help students understand its transformative role in creative industries, develop a critical perspective on its ethical and social implications, and explore it as a source of innovation and entrepreneurial opportunity within the fields of design and communication.
Together, we developed and launched an AI learning space where students explore the potential of Artificial Intelligence across conceptual, practical, and ethical dimensions. The initiative empowers students to become not just users of AI, but innovators and critical thinkers capable of shaping the creative industries of tomorrow. After the first semester, 24 students successfully completed the program — now equipped with the knowledge and perspective to apply AI meaningfully in their projects. Moving forward, the course will continue to evolve, integrating new tools, insights, and methodologies to keep it alive, relevant, and forward-thinking.
Throughout the semester, students: - Gained foundational knowledge about AI and learned to apply it within their professional practice. - Analyzed and designed real-world applications of AI in design, communication, and entrepreneurship. - Created hands-on AI projects addressing real challenges in their disciplines. - Reflected critically on the ethical aspects of AI, such as privacy, bias, transparency, and social responsibility.
Next projects.
